Some of North Carolina’s to the lowest degree funded college athletic departments and each county’s youth sports programs would receive money from online sports gambling taxes under the latest changes to bills inwards the state House.

The House Finance committee adopted changes to SB 38’s revenue distribution Wednesday morning. The committee overwhelmingly passed SB 38 and SB 688, two bills that work together to legalize online sports gambling on professional, college and electronic sports as well as Equus caballus racing for adults inwards North Carolina.

Initial projections were that gambling could raise $8 million to $24 million annually through taxes and fees on sports wagering operators. But fees and taxes take hold been raised inwards the legislation, so the state is expected to collect more revenue.

Tax revenue collected would be distributed this way:

• $2 million annually to the Department of wellness and Human Services for gambling addiction instruction and treatment programs.

• $500,000 annually to the North Carolina Parks and Recreation Authority for $5,000 grants to each county for youth sports development.

Of the remaining proceeds:

• 10% annually would be distributed as to athletic departments at Elizabeth City State University, Fayetteville State University, North Carolina A&T State University, North Carolina Central University, UNC-Asheville, UNC-Pembroke and Winston-Salem State University

• 30% would go to the newly created North Carolina Major Events, Games, and Attractions Fund

• 60% would go to the state’s full general Fund

The original bills called for $1 million to gambling services, 50% to the major events fund and the remaining to the full general fund.
