TN Invites Stakeholders For Consultation On Online Gaming As Gambling Websites Pose Higher Risk

The Tamil Nadu authorities today is meeting stakeholders with their inputs on legislating online gaming. As per the Govt, there have got been nearly 20 deaths inwards the state, inwards recent times, due to the financial distress caused by online gambling.
This led to voices calling for ban on online gaming altogether. But the online gaming manufacture, which includes skill-based gaming similar fantasy sports and esports with huge economical potential, claim that the states have got failed to consider the real menace of offshore gambling and betting platforms that continue to operate inwards the country with no legal oversight or safeguards for consumers.
Data from the Union Ministry of place Affairs (MHA) show that more than 5000 complaints were registered against online gambling websites on the National Cybercrime Reporting Portal between August 31, 2019 and December 31, 2021. Media reports & a recent report by the ESYA Centre, a technology policy think tank indicate that a significant share of these grievances are related to offshore gambling & betting websites.
