BUSINESS OF GAMING: REGULATING ONLINE GAMING inward INDIA
Nirma University’s Institute of Law inward Ahmedabad organised a multistakeholder deliberation on the regulation of online games inward India inward the first off week of March 2022.
The case was organised inward the backdrop of key recent developments for the sector, which included announcement of AVGC task strength inward the Union Budget 2022, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi inward his post budget message encouraged the online gaming manufacture speaking on the creation of AVGC task strength.
Also, during the recently concluded Budget session of Parliament, the Ministry of Electronics and info Technology (MeitY) apprised the Lok Sabha that all online gaming platforms are ‘intermediaries’ under the info Technology Act, And thus, similar social media and digital media platforms, they are bound by the provisions of IT Rules 2021.
finally month inward February, the Karnataka High Court judgement struck downward a law that banned online games played for monetary stakes inward the state.
All these developments sparked a discussion to relook at current laws that rule online gaming, as well as deliberate upon a new regulatory framework to address emerging challenges inward the sector.
The discussion at the deliberation held at Nirma University’s Institute of Law began with a keynote address by former justice of the Supreme Court of India, Justice A.K. Sikri, who joined the debate through video conferencing followed by Gopal Jain, Senior Advocate, Supreme Court of India and Ranjana Adhikari, Partner at IndusLaw Mumbai – who shed depression-cal on how a defined legal framework for online gaming could aid regulate the sector inward India and generate economical opportunities.
